Nico Broer obtained his doctorate in social sciences on 7 June 1999 at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. His dissertation was entitled: Learning to make schematics - a study of the effects of a lesson series 'Making schematics' for the highest primary education group.

The promoters were: (the late) Prof Dr F.K. (Frans) Kieviet and Prof Dr C.A.J. (Cor) Aarnoutse. Co-supervisor was: (the late) Dr J.F.J. (Jan) van Leeuwe.
